The COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Plan in Louisiana

  • Louisiana is now administering COVID-19 vaccines produced by Pfizer and Moderna to adults age 70 and older at approximately 100 pharmacies statewide. Appointments are required, and many seniors have not been able to get a vaccine yet because of high demand for a limited number of doses.
  • The first shots were reserved for long-term care residents and staff and health care workers who are actively treating patients, as well as for emergency medical services employees and firefighters. Louisiana opened vaccinations to the first tier of its next distribution group on Jan 4. This group includes people 70 and older; outpatient and home health care workers; staff and patients at end-stage-renal-care facilities; and residents, staff and students at medical schools. Federal officials announced Jan. 12 that they are strongly recommending that all states allow those 65-plus to be vaccinated, but it’s not clear if the announcement will affect Louisiana’s plan.
  • Vaccine news is changing quickly. Check this guide for updates in days ahead.
