Press Release

Burlington MA: January 31, 2017—Despite the many Public Health successes over the last century, health disparity continues to exist in in American society. So says a new book from Jones & Bartlett Learning just published today: Health Disparities, Diversity, and Inclusion: Context, Controversies, and Solutions.

This book addresses this topic head on, exploring steps that must be taken to prepare for the rapidly changing demographics in American society, including immigration reform (emerging majorities), and evidenced based information substantiating the fact that diversity matters in terms of the provision of health care.   Dr. Rose can share her knowledge about the following subjects:

  • Health disparities
  • Diversity, Inclusiveness and Immigration
  • Obamacare and health care in general
  • Mass incarceration and the k-12 School to Prison Population
  • Social Justice matters
  • Cultural competence

“I first became interested in the topic of health disparities as a graduate student in the field of Public Health at Yale University,” says the book’s author Patti Rose, MPH, EdD  who continued to passionately pursue the topic while pursuing her Doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University. Later in her career as a Professor, she expressed: “I was surprised that the exact same health disparities that existed during my graduate studies, continued to persist, and still exist, decades later, essentially unchanged.”

Health Disparities, Diversity, and Inclusion examines diversity in terms of patient satisfaction and quality outcomes with an emphasis on racial, ethnic, gender and linguistic diversity. The book highlights steps that key stakeholders—including federal, state, and private health care and public health entities—should take to ensure that representatives from emerging majority groups are involved with and serve as leaders in terms of the provision of health care at every level. The discussion of diversity is contrasted with the concept of cultural competency and how both go hand in hand in terms of the ultimate goal of closing the health status gap in the United States.

Beyond health disparities, other social injustice issues are explored in depth including mass incarceration, the school to prison pipeline, food injustice, educational disparities, the digital divide and more. Obamacare, immigration and spiritual/religious issues, as related to health and healing, are also explored.  Each chapter culminates with a discussion of solutions, which is the focal point of the book, rather than merely stating the problems. Ample case studies explore real and relevant topics from the news such as the Flint, Michigan water crisis, the student loan crisis and its impact on diversity, mental health, health literacy and more. The appendix includes a useful Cultural Competence Assessment Survey (in three forms) with established validity and reliability, which can be used to determine one’s cultural competency preparedness to serve in the health care field, from an attitudinal perspective.

The book is intended for courses in programs of Public Health, Health Education, Nursing, and other Allied Health Professions but can also be used in a variety of other programs and courses, which focus on Social Justice on a broader basis. Beyond the classroom, it is a read for all who are interested in understanding health disparities, diversity and other social injustice issues, with an emphasis on solutions.

Health Disparities, Diversity, and Inclusion: Context, Controversies, and Solutions is available on the Jones & Bartlett Learning website at www.jblearning.com or wherever books are sold. Qualified instructors are invited to request complimentary review copies from Jones and Bartlett learning for course adoption consideration. Such requests can also be placed on the Jones & Bartlett Learning website.
