Careers in Health Policy and Systems Management

Healthcare executives influence the lives of thousands of people daily.  In the true spirit of public health.  Healthcare manages pursue a social mission of improving the health of communities served by adhering to high ethical standards. Their work may occur in organizations that deliver health services, or in the policy arena through public and not for profit agencies.

Healthcare now employs nine percent of the U.S. workforce, and is projected to become the job sector in our economy. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that “Employment of medical and health services managers is projected to grow 20 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.  As the large baby boom population ages and people remain active later in life, there should be increased demand for healthcare services.”

Many career paths are available to HPSM graduates, and career flexibility across these paths is common.  LSU has a special commitment to health policy, which has led graduates to roles in State and Federal agencies and professional associations and foundations.  LSU graduates have been employed by hospitals and medical groups.  In addition, others have entered pharmaceutical companies, health insurance companies, and long term care facilities.
