With the increased risk of threats to the public’s health such as pandemics, natural and man-made disasters, and climate change, understanding the role of leadership to effective risk mitigation and response to these emergencies is critical. In this chapter titled “ Coordination of Public Health Response: The Role of Leadership in Responding to Public Health Emergencies” the authors, Dr. Peter Fos, Dr. Peggy Honoré and Lt. Gen RusselHonoré (retired) provide findings from research for the coordination of leadership across multiple levels of authority. Lessons learned from past experiences in events such as Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Thailand tsunami, and the COVID-19 pandemic are also used to illustrate improvements needed in future emergency responses.

Authored in collaboration by Peter J. Fos, Peggy A. Honoré and Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré, Faculty and Adjuct Faculty, respectively, in the School of Public Health, Health Policy and Systems Management Program.
